There are plenty of storage drives available for storage, and many users get confused about which hard drive to choose. To the layman, all hard drives are the same, but this is a wrong assumption. A normal hard drive is not usually the best choice for a surveillance system, and thus it cannot be used interchangeably without certain limitations.

A standard hard disk is designed in such a way to work only about 8 to 9 hours daily for 5 to 6 days a week. Whereas a Surveillance Hard Disk is built to perform 24×7 all year round. This makes them one of the core parts of a Surveillance System and they need to be active all the time.

A Standard Hard Disk is engineered to read, write, and transfer data simultaneously. Whereas a Surveillance Hard Disk is engineered to perform write operation for the maximum part of its life, as the Hard Disks used in the surveillance system is used to write data 90% of the time and 10% for playback. Therefore, a Surveillance Hard Disk will give better performance compared to a Standard Hard Disk which cannot withstand the always-on operational demand of a Surveillance System.

We as System Integrators, always advise you to invest in a good Quality Surveillance Hard Disk. There is no point in investing a lot of money on a Surveillance System if the video recording hardware is not 100% compatible with the needs. Both types of hard disks are engineered for different functions, so if you are setting up a CCTV better to choose video-optimized surveillance drives, which will provide you with the best overall performance and reliability and ultimately save your money in the long run.
